On Monday we are going to have an open forum discussion about literacy, how it functions in the 21st century, and how it relates to the four authors we’ve read and discussed.
To prepare for the discussion, I would like you to write specific, thoughtful answers to the questions below in your notebook. Completing them thoroughly will enable you to fully participate in the discussion on Monday and to begin writing on Tuesday.
Please copy or paraphrase these questions in your notebook and then respond:
- Why is it important to be literate? Provide reasons and evidence from your background knowledge and experience.
- What does it mean to be literate in the 21st century as opposed to eras when technology was less prevalent? New Literacy is associated with skills that are necessary as we adapt to reading and writing in different ways based on technology’s influence. Consider what has changed. Here’s a link to a Scholastic article considering these new skills. You may integrate it as a source in your response.
- How does the importance of literacy in the 21st century relate to the four authors we’ve read? Consider your own experiences with reading and writing and how those relate to the authors’ notions of the importance of literacy.
